Last Day in Vietnam: A Memory by Will Eisner
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I'm not usually a graphic novel reader but this caught my interest. I'm well, fascinated by the Vietnam war and the military life in general and the blurb tolled of emotional tales. And I like emotional tales as well.
I wasn't disappointed. I like the short glimpses into the military life and the various emotional states and happenings. I liked how most of the tales were directed as I was present in the scene. The languages the characters used felt realistic, as well did their behaviour and emotions.
I also liked the style of the graphics, usually one of the things I do not liked. I liked the raw texture and use of of coal (or what it is), and lack of colour. I liked how the pages were used. I also liked the use of photographs - made you realise even more that this happened to real, living human beings.
The stories I liked the best were "A purple heart for George" and "Hard Duty.
All in all I liked it. The stories managed to capture the various fates and feelings of a war.
