Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Plague has arrived at a little English village. The people faces tough decisions, and from the sorrow and hardship, Anna Frith steps forward.
The tale is told by Anna, a maid to the local rector, and begins a while before plague arrives. Through her eyes we get to experience loss, sadness, despair, freight and fighting spirit.
The story sheds lights on human behaviour; how we act in hardships, how our decisions, believes and sense is challenged during dark times.
But there's also blossoming friendship, learning, finding oneself and one's call.
The language was poetic in it's simpleness, with great descriptions and observations. The style didn't try to be overly old-fashioned in a way that disturbed and felt unreal, but the style of the older words, descriptions and way of expressions felt natural and fitting.
An interesting read.
